DATA/COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT 

COVID COMMUNITY HEALTH PROJECT 

PART-TIME/Regular/Non-Exempt (approx. 15-19 hours per week) 

Start Date: Immediate 

Urban Strategies Council (Council) is an active leader and partner in COVID community outreach and recovery work. We are funded to coordinate a regional (Bay Area) COVID community engagement and collective impact program to increase vaccination rates and COVID preparedness. The Council will assist the implementation of a short-term (through 12/31/22) project to increase COVID awareness and vaccination rates in the Bay area. The Regional Program Director will coordination and facilitate communications and collaboration between 11 organizations from the Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Solano counties). 

This position seeks a candidate with a background in community outreach and engagement, collective impact strategies/implementation, group facilitation, organizational collaboration, project management, and public health best practices. The Program Director will support senior-level staff in advancing regional collaboration and communications, project management, volunteer recruitment, training for participating organizations, reporting to funders, and other project-related activities. 

Intellectual curiosity, solution-driven, commitment to the organization’s mission, flexibility, and creativity within the position’s specifications are assets, as is knowledge of the Oakland or the San Francisco Bay Area. This position requires a combination of facilitation, research, analytical writing, and oral skills, communication skills, community engagement and outreach, and public speaking. Applicants must have a solid ability to juggle multiple projects. 
ABOUT URBAN STRATEGIES COUNCIL (the Council) 
Founded in 1987, the Urban Strategies Council (the Council) is a regional anchor organization dedicated to advancing economic, racial, and social equity in the Bay Area. Our mission is to eliminate persistent poverty in the San Francisco Bay area by working with partners to transform low-income neighborhoods into vibrant, healthy communities. To achieve this mission, we focus our work on increasing the knowledge, capacity, and strength of Black and Brown leaders and organizations in the Bay area and dismantling systemic barriers to opportunity for Black and Brown residents. 

The Council works regionally and nationally to provide research, data and policy analysis, strategic planning, program development and evaluation, capacity building and advocacy in service of advancing equity. Our work ranges from grassroots organizing support and community leadership training programming, to local government consulting, community-focused research, and advocacy on behalf of the communities we serve.

ABOUT THIS WORK 

This position will provide data and communications support for a collaboration of Bay Area organizations participating in the COVID Community Health project. This effort is funded by the Sierra Health Foundation. This position reports to the CCHP Regional Program Director. 

SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE: 

  • Support the Regional Director in program design and implementation, development of research methods/programs for Council initiatives and programs, data management, and administrative operations. 

  • Lead data collection and data gathering quality control activities for CCHP project. 

  • Train project partners on use of CCHP data systems. 

  • Coordinate social media and communications outreach campaigns for CCHP. 

  • Conduct data-driven research in areas of public health, substance use and violence prevention around policies impacting low-income communities of color. 

  • Support and co-design qualitative research studies. 

  • Develop data-driven storytelling products such as blogging, social media. 

  • Outreach to vulnerable communities (specifically communities impacted by violence), 

  • Create resource development inventory for CCHP projects, 

  • Seek funding and support staff on grant writing and resource development, 

  • Handle internal and external communications related to CCHP. 

  • Manage project office equipment maintenance and office/project supplies inventories 

  • Attend and help with project events/meetings/convenings. 

  • Assist with project payroll recordkeeping and distribution. 

  • Assist with accounts payable, accounts receivable and invoicing. 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

Education Requirements 

  • Associates Degree or 2 years college minimum. 

Required Experience 

  • 1-2 years of relevant experience in social science research, public health, or related field. 

  • 1-2 years social media and website support experience, especially to support community outreach and engagement strategies. 

  • 1-2 years’ experience in research, data analysis, and interpretation, and report preparation. 

  • Excellent written and oral communications. 

  • Use online databases for data entry, analysis, and reports. 

  • Comfortable working with partners from diverse backgrounds (academia, policy, technology, civil society) and with people from diverse ethnic, linguistic, and economic backgrounds. 

Desirable Experience 

  • Working with GIS and mapping software. 

  • Understanding of theories of social change. 

  • Group facilitation, meeting management, and public presentations. 

  • Facilitation, training, and research support. 

  • Experience in creating and implementing work plans for projects, work groups. 

  • Experience developing new relationships and partnerships and the ability to identify shared goals among a diverse group of stakeholders. 

Desirable Characteristics: 

  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders including youth of color, their families and community-based organizations supporting their positive development. 

  • Project management (PM) experience, including use of PM software. 

  • Organized, self-motivated, with great attention to detail. 

  • Team oriented – brings a collaborative spirit to a team focused on advancing equity outcomes and holding each other accountable. 

  • Bi-lingual skills (written and oral) and/or bicultural competence a plus, 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

This position is part-time (less than 20 hrs. week), non-exempt, and hybrid (remote and in-person). The compensation rate based on experience and education is approximately $35-38 per hour. Employee will not receive compensation for paid time off. Employees accrue California-mandated sick time. This position is funded through 12/31/22. Start date: Immediate.
