For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position. 

Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.

Minimum Qualifications 

EDUCATION: 

  • High school diploma or GED. 

EXPERIENCE: 

  • Seven (7) years of experience in animal related field, veterinary clinic or zoo/aquarium which must include at least three (3) of the following areas: 

  • Management of people 

  • Inventory management 

  • Process improvement 

  • Preparing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) 

  • Establishing and meeting goals 

  • Coaching, mentoring and/or training 

  • Resolving complaints 

  • Customer service 

  • Developing programs 

  • Statistical reporting/monitoring 

AND 
 

  • Two (2) years of supervisory/management experience. (This experience may be included in the required experience listed above.) 

EQUIVALENCY(IES): 

  • An associate's degree in any field plus five (5) years of the required experience including two (2) years of the stated supervisory/management responsibilities will meet the education and experience requirements. 

  • A bachelor's degree (or higher) in any field plus three (3) years of the required experience including two (2) years of the stated supervisory/management responsibilities will meet the education and experience requirements. 

  • Valid Basic Animal Control Officer certification plus six (6) years of the required experience including two (2) years of supervisory/management responsibilities will meet the experience requirements. 

  • Valid professional animal shelter/control related training and/or certification(s) from a State or National organization plus six (6) years of the required experience including two (2) years of leadwork/supervisory responsibilities will meet the experience requirements. 

LICENSE(S) and/or CERTIFICATION(S): 

  • A current valid driver's license and good driving record. 

  • Must obtain a Basic Animal Control Officer certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) within the probationary period. 

  • Must obtain a Euthanasia certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) within the probationary period. 

OTHER REQUIREMENT(S): 

  • No felony drug convictions within the last 10 years 

  • No animal cruelty convictions. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITY(IES): 

  • Knowledge of management information software systems. 

  • Effective oral and written communication skills. 

  • MS Office or similar software skills. 

  • Ability to promote public/private partnerships. 

  • Ability to correspond with a fifteen (15)-member Animal Shelter Advisory Board. 

PREFERENCE(S): 

  • Animal sheltering software experience is a plus. 

  • Community outreach experience is a plus
