Heath is an 80 year old family owned company that provides various services to several of the largest utility companies in the nation. One of our trademark services is the locating and marking of buried utility lines. If you like working outdoors in all weather and protecting the public, this position may be the perfect fit for you. You must be able to work with minimal supervision and be able to deal with customers and construction contractors in a professional manner in addition to your normal duties. This is a position that can lead to a career as we have several field technicians with decades of experience. Heath also has an excellent record of promotions from within and most of the management team started out as field technicians. Prior experience is not required; we will train the right people but we welcome experienced locators.

Utility locating is the art and science of finding and marking buried utility lines so proper precautions can be taken when people are digging near them, preventing service outages and possibly saving lives and property. If you’ve ever been sitting in traffic and noticed different colors of paint and flags on the ground in the median or pavement and wondered what they are, you have found the answer. The marks are color coded based on what utility they represent. Some examples are blue for water, red for power, orange for phone/cable/fiber, green for sewer, and yellow for natural gas.

Anyone breaking ground for any reason is required by law to call 811 and make a locate request prior to digging. They are supposed to allow 48 hours for the marking to occur and then they can do the work. Once the locate request is made it is sent to us and is assigned to one of locators based on geographical area. All of our locators have company vehicles with computers in them, and the request will show up on the locator’s computer. The requests are color coded based on urgency and will have the address where the locate is to be performed. The locator drives to the address and opens the request in order to read the detailed directions for the part of the property that needs to be marked.

Once the area to be marked is determined, the tech will look at the prints of the area to see what they should expect to find. Our contract is only to mark natural gas, so the prints will show which gas lines run underneath the area. The next step is to hook up the equipment to actually find the pipes. One piece of equipment sits in one place and transmits a signal down the pipe and the other piece is carried by hand and receives the signal. Based on the readings from the receiver the locator can determine where the piping is and puts either paint or a flag (or both) down to indicate the pipe is buried beneath the mark.

After the marks are made the locator will double check their prints to make sure that everything shown on the prints in the locate area has actually been found. The next step is to take pictures of the locating marks so there is documentation of where the marks were prior to them being disturbed by digging. Once the pictures are taken they are attached to the locate request in the computer and then uploaded as the request is closed.
